MIXED-USE HIGH RISE COMPLEXES IN ANKARA AND THEIR RELATION TO URBAN DESIGN IN THE 2000S
 
Construction, transportation, and information technologies always functioned parallel to set the accumulative phases of social and economic structure of the world throughout the history. A historical overview of the notion of mixed-use high rise complexes is examined in terms of evolution and spatial practice. Mixed-use high rise complexes combine compatible programs to create capital flows and sustain urban life as an elucidation for the crowded central business districts. Gathering different programs under one umbrella on complete land is a reasonable way for the coziness of the people. It is a human-oriented approach. For instance, walking in a secure environment, eating, shopping, doing sport in close proximity, enjoying greenery would be a healthy and comfortable way of urban life in a small scale while the dwelling is on the core of the land. Nowadays, mixed-use is on the agenda either in metropolises or regional areas. Although mixed-use has many advantages in relation to urban design, Ankara has witnessed some negative effects of this process. Particularly, beginning from the late 1990s, the changes in financial, cultural, commercial and residential accumulations in the capital city of Turkey, Ankara, have altered the urban development. As a result, this study reveals the pros and cons of this new spatial organization named as mixed-use high rise complexes and draws attention to the improvement of the urban design on the whole process.
