INCREASING THE WEAR PROPERTIES AGAINST HIGH TEMPERATURE BY COATING THE IRON-BASED SUPER ALLOY TO 4140 STEEL BY LASER MELTING DEPOSITION METHOD

Iron is the most abundant metal in our world. Steel production in 2021 is expected to be 1.9 billion tons. Turkey is the 8th largest steel producer in the world. Low alloy steel AISI4140 is widely used in many parts of transportation vehicles including crankshafts of automobiles, agricultural equipment tools, many machine parts such as gears, various defense industry parts such as gun barrels and tank pallets due to its easy processing and heat treatment properties. In cases where the temperature exceeds 6000C and when high resistance, toughness, and abrasion resistance are required at these temperatures, which we call difficult conditions, coating with a superalloy could be the solution. Recent studies have shown that the quality of coatings made by powder metal melting or sintering, such as the LMD method, approaches the quality of the mechanical properties obtained by forging. Although Nickel and Cobalt-based superalloys are used in the hottest turbine regions of jet engines, which are considered to be the most difficult conditions, the shafts and main carrier structure consist of iron-based superalloys. In this study, the wear properties of iron-based super alloy-coated and uncoated AISI4140 steel by the Laser Melting Deposition method were investigated. Six pieces coated and uncoated discs were prepared and 10,000 m were run at 50N load on a pin on a disk machine at six different temperatures from room temperature to 8000C, respectively. Due to oxidation of uncoated disc-less weight loss was obtained from wear at 6500C and weight gain were obtained at 8000C. The iron super alloy coated disc showed the least wear at 5000C, and there was no weight gain at 6500C since there was no oxidation. At 8000C, there was weight gain with the onset of oxidation.
