DETERMINATION OF OPTIMAL PROCESS PARAMETERS OF WEDM BY USING RESPONSE SURFACE METHODOLOGY

Wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) has an important role among non-traditional machining processes owing to its capability to cut precisely, geometrically complex material regardless hardness. In WEDM process, surface roughness is crucial for quality and performance of the finished products. For achieving the optimum level of surface quality, the proper selection of machining-process parameters in WEDM is very essential. In the present study, the experimental analysis have been carried out to investigate the factor effects on surface roughness (SR) in WEDM process when machining of AISI 4340 steel material. Experiments have been conducted by using response surface methodology (RSM) used to investigate the parametric interactions between four controllable variables namely, cutting parameters of pulse duration, open circuit voltage, wire speed, and dielectric flushing are considered as model variables on surface roughness. It was found that, pulse duration, and wire speed are the most significant factors effecting on SR. The predictive model sufficiency is very satisfactory as the coefficient of determination is 0.879. This study is accomplished for the development of SR model aiming to make the WEDM cost effectiveness. The confirmation test reveals error from 1.96% to 8.59 with a mean error as 6.39% which is acceptable as less than 10%.
