INVESTIGATING THE MECHANICAL PERFORMANCE OF HONEYCOMB STRUCTURES IN SHOE INSOLE

The quality of shoe insole is one of the most critical issues for many people especially those who have flat feet or diabetics, as it affects not only the feet but the entire body and may cause general health problems. The majority of shoe manufacturing enterprises are facing difficulty in choosing the best design and material to be used as insoles for the shoes they make, considering many criteria at one time, such as high performance, lightweight, and good pressure distribution. Thus, a new bio-inspired material (honeycomb structure) is proposed to solve this problem, designing an insole made of it, and investigating its mechanical performance to help those enterprises with their material selection, and so help the flat-foot and diabetic people. This study suggests a honeycomb-based shoe insole designed using a finite element analysis approach to improve the pressure distribution (compression) to the human foot. Ls-Dyna software was used for the design and simulation processes, the material used for the honeycomb structure was PLA, and the infill percentage was 25% solid, modifying many specifications including the insole design, the infill percentage, and some of the honeycomb dimensions to reach the final version of the insole which can achieve the targeted goals.
