VARESTRAINT WELDABILITY TEST FOR HIGH TECHNOLOGY WELDING OPERATIONS
 
On the basis of aviation sector, aircraft gas turbine engines are expected to meet the highest standards such as reliability, strength/ weight ratio, performance and service life. Hence low cost, robust, high temperature and high corrosion/ oxidation resistant materials, which are not only used in aerospace and aircraft industry, but also in ship, locomotive, petro- chemistry and nuclear reactor industries, has continuously maintained its actuality. Inconel 718 is a Ni-based, precipitation- hardening superalloy with Nb as a major hardening element. Hot section components such as combustions, blades and vanes are generally made from nickel-based superalloys like Inconel 718. Utilization of super alloys in aerospace and defense industries cannot be ignored because of the excellent corrosion and oxidation resistance, high strength and long creep life at elevated temperatures. The suitability of varestraint test instrument for lazer welded specimen used only for GTAW welded specimen for the evaluation of micro fissure susceptibility of HAZ of the welded specimen quantitatively has been investigated. In the present study The Varestraint Weldability Test (VWT) is designed for high technology welding operations such as laser and electron beam welding. The VWT allows material developers and end users to evaluate a given alloy’s weldability with a simple and well-accepted procedure. ORCID NO: 0000-0002-3506-7892
