THE MATERIAL HANDLING SYSTEMS IN GREEN INTERNAL LOGISTICS AND AN APPLICATION

Today, the environment and ecological balance have begun to be taken into account in logistics due to the increasing energy consumption, environmental pollution and carbon emissions. While in traditional logistics the focus is on economic factors, in green logistics a more sustainable system design is considered. Internal logistics is the whole of the activities that plan the movement of materials within the production facility, store and handling the products. For a company that produces agricultural and livestock machinery, the problem of material handling has been taken into account. The firm will continue production with an additional facility in order to meet the demand. The parts that are welded in the additional facility are taken to the paint shop and painted before proceeding to assembly. A new material handling system will be designed between paint shop and assembly line. Due to the material handling problems in the existing facility, standard times of products are extended. Material handling with forklifts and pallet trucks cause confusion in the facility, especially during handling large-sized items. The extra energy expenditure of the forklift for handling causes energy wastage. In this context, environmental factors as well as economic factors were taken into account in the material handling system selection problem. A methodology is proposed for the solution of the problem. The methodology was applied in the firm and the most suitable material handling system was proposed for the firm.
