COMPARISON OF THE EFFECTS OF DIMMING METHODS ON DIRECT-LIT BACKLIGHT SYSTEMS

Due to the fact that LEDs have great advantages such as long life, cheap, low energy consumption compared to other traditional sources, they have quickly replaced traditional lighting products. As its usage area expanded, R&D studies on it increased rapidly and it became a mature technology in a short time. This development in LED technology led to a revolution in the TV industry and led to the emergence of new generation TVs. With this growth, the increasing demand has put the producers in a great competition in terms of price and quality. In order to stand out in this competition, manufacturers have adopted the method of creating product diversity with common materials. One of the most important parameters determining the segmentation in the TV industry is the brightness value. Pulse width modulation and analog dimming methods are used to adjust the common backlight system at different brightness levels. By obtaining various brightnesses with different PWM or analog dimming values, products in different segments can be designed with the same backlight. With this situation, it has become important to control the behavior of backlight systems at different pwm or analog dimming values. In this study, a direct-lit backlight system was installed with the LEDs of 3 different led brands, and the brightness and color shifts were measured at different pwm and analog dimming levels. Differences between analog dimming and pwm are compared.
