Transportation is the movement of people or goods from one place to another for a specific purpose. There are main types of transportation such as highway, railway, airway, and waterborne; according to the results of the National Transportation Master Plan (NTMP), it is seen that road transportation has the largest share among these types in our country. Investments in transportation types ease access to the current travel demands of the relevant transportation type, while at the same time increasing the passenger demands that will occur in the future. The high share of road transportation is the result of transportation policies and investments in our country. The increase in highway investments also increases the demand for freight and passengers. It has been observed that road safety has decreased, and the number of traffic accidents has increased with the increase in demand on highways. When traffic accidents are examined, it is seen that the accidents are concentrated on the same road sections on different dates. The determination of these road sections, which are called accident black spots, is of great importance in terms of preventing traffic accidents. In this context, accident studies and investigations are carried out in order to increase traffic safety and ensure the safety of the life and property of people. In this study, accident black spots were determined by using the accident data of 2016, 2017, and 2018 belonging to Yalova Province. Within the scope of the study, the geographical locations of the points where traffic accidents occurred were digitized in the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) environment. Thus, with the data obtained from the accident reports, it was determined where, how often and for what reasons the accidents occurred. Detailed investigations were made on the causes of these accidents. If the accidents occur in the intersection area, it is analyzed which intersection type occurs more frequently. In addition, analyzes were made about the category of these accidents according to the type such as side impact or rear impact. Thus, traffic accident black spots in Yalova Province were determined and suggestions were developed regarding what precautions should be taken for these points.
