Collaboration, predominant paradigm of today’s supply network management, is facilitated using multiple smart technologies within IoT philosophy. Collaborative innovation creation, representing a radical paradigm shift involves co-development of product&process innovation with early involvement of all supply network partners (suppliers, customers, service providers), fostering open innovation and continuous learning within a creative ecosystem. This study provides an overview of how collaborative paradigm is extended to innovative design&development processes across network partners via smart technologies. The study holds a network ecosystem perspective. The literature review puts forward that integrated cross-partner use of smart technologies (such as 3D printers, enterprise application solutions, advanced simulation tools, augmented virtual reality; AI and shared virtual collaborative platforms) provides: a) accelerated dynamic innovation processes; b) designer collaboration in virtual platforms; c) seamless integration of design databases with the backbone ERP systems and manufacturing systems; d) rapid joint prototyping via simulation and virtual reality tools, reducing the lead time of the overall design cycle; e) simulating multiple design alternatives; f) AI-based support for the evaluation of multiple design options; g) direct customer involvement in the design processes via 3D printer technology, facilitating rapid customization, specialized product designs, and providing mass customization capabilities, flexibility and responsiveness for the entire network. Consequently, collaborative innovation represents a strategic level knowledge sharing across partners requiring shared mission-critical design data and processes supported by a wide range of smart technologies. Along with investing in recent technological components, trusted relations among partners act as a catalyst, appearing at the hearth of collaborative innovation.
