SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF THE USE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN CONSTRUCTION SAFETY

Construction is a hazardous industry and workers working in construction projects compared to other industries. The accident records of the construction sector reflect that workers in this field are over three times more likely to be exposed to fatal accidents. Consequently, companies and researchers are actively looking for methods to improve their safety performance, and one of the strategies they are exploring is the use of technology to improve health and safety measures. By incorporating technology into their safety practices, companies can achieve higher levels of safety performance. Despite there is a recent literature that focus on digital tools and technologies used in construction safety practices, far too little attention has been paid to the use of artificial intelligence in construction safety. This systematic review aimed to explore the current state of research on the use of artificial intelligence in construction safety. A comprehensive search of academic databases and relevant industry sources was conducted. The analysis results showed that artificial intelligence has the potential to significantly improve construction safety by using predictive analytics, automating hazardous conditions through computer vision, using autonomous equipment and analyzing on-site data through machine-learning based algorithms. Thus, automated safety inspections, predicted safety hazards, and providing real-time safety alerts are common practice. The review concludes that AI has immense potential to improve construction safety, and calls for the construction industry to embrace this technology to create a safer work environment for both workers and the public.
