INVESTIGATION OF THE CORROSION EFFECTS ON MARINE VEHICLES USING COATING AND CATHODIC PROTECTION METHODS

Corrosion is a problem experienced by all industries, it has become a problem that threatens our practical lives and the environment we live in. Statistical studies show that industrialized countries calculate billions of dollars in financial losses due to corrosion. At least 10% of the metals extracted from underground are consumed each year to compensate for the loss caused by corrosion. Losses caused by corrosion are numerous, including human health, financial and economic losses, and directly affect the environment. Corrosion occurs due to chemical and electrochemical reactions. It revealed that corrosion often leads to an unscheduled shutdown of production facilities, resulting in unexpected additional economic costs. Major industries with high corrosion problems are the marine industries. Losses due to corrosion are great in ship industries. This combination can provide very good protection over a long period of time. The applied methods actually show that the corrosion protection applications on ships are still very insufficient. The greatest corrosion damage to ships is usually seen in ship installations, decks, shafts, valves. There are two basic methods of protection against corrosion. First, it is stopped by the reaction (coating) between the metal surface and sea water. In the second method, application of cathodic protection method. In the study, studies on preventing corrosion on ships commonly used in the maritime industry were examined. The application and working principles of the coating methods used were explained. Coating methods and cathodic protection studies were compared. As a result of the studies, it was seen that the cathodic protection created a more effective protection.
