EFFECTS OF USING NANOCLAY THAT IS SURFACE-MODIFIED WITH SILVER COMPLEX ON THE THERMAL, MECHANICAL AND ANTIBACTERIAL PROPERTIES OF RIGID POLYURETHANE FOAMS

Polyurethanes are one of the important groups of polymeric materials. Which have super properties that make them suitable for a different range of applications .rigid polyurethane foam (RPUFs) is extensively used for thermal insulation, construction, and packaging. rigid Polyurethane foams (PURFs) were synthesized with (Cloisite 30B, sodium montmorillonite Na MMT) and (Silver modified montmorillonites clay Ag MMT, Silver modified cloisite-30B clay Ag 30B) nanoclay. Firstly 1% clay was dispersed in the isocyanate component ultrasonically, then mixed with a polyol, catalyst, and blowing agent mixture by mechanically stirred to produce foams samples. The prepared samples of PURF were tested with different characterization techniques such as Fourier transfer infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, density, mechanical, thermal conductivity, Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and antibacterial properties tests were performed. Functional groups of polyurethane foams were determined by FTIR, There is no change much in the chemical structure of PURF with the addition of nanoclay. The mechanical properties of Polyurethane rigid foams were examined by compression test. At 1% nanoclay reduced the compressive strength of the rigid foams. Thermal properties of pure RPUFs and nanocomposite foams were investigated by thermal conductivity coefficient (k-factor) and, thermogravimetric analyzer device. The antibacterial activity of the prepared samples was tested by using the disc diffusion method.
