A REVIEW OF TEXTURED CUTTING TOOLS IN MANUFACTURING ENVIRONMENT

Surface texturing is one of the promising techniques that improves the tribological properties of materials. The surface textures have different geometrical dimensions and shapes. The main mechanisms of improving these textures' tribological properties are reduction in contact length and improved lubrication capacity. This method also has a wide application area in the area of manufacturing. Textured cutting tools are one of them. These cutting tools have micro/nano-sized grooves, holes, or bumps in their structures, reducing cutting forces and temperatures and reducing frictional interaction between the cutting tool and workpiece. A textured surface on the cutting tools reduces the contact area between the cutting tool and chip. Hence, the wear effect is suppressed in material removal operations. In this study, a review study was conducted in turning, milling and drilling operations in terms of textured cutting tools. First, standard surface texturing techniques were explained in the literature. Then, different textured designs were discussed in turning, milling and drilling operations. The advantages of textured cutting tools were mentioned. According to several studies, textured cutting tools provide decreases of up to 25% in surface roughness, 25% in cutting forces, 10% in cutting temperatures, and up to 35% in flank wear in comparison to conventional cutting tools.
